Regatta results

A huge well done to all the crews out racing at W&W and WLARC regattas the weekend 21 and 22 May.

Saturday: Walton and Weybridge Regatta.

A fantastic start to the weekend with our masters quad taking a win by 1.25 lengths over Walton. They achieved a PB of 3.06 and Tegwynne subbed in last minute to save the day. (Crew: Anji, Debbie, Maria, Tegwynne.) Another strong performance from WLARC followed in the afternoon with the WIM3.4+. They had a dead heat against Eton Excelsior and then an immediate rerow which they only lost by less than a length. (Crew: Alex, Sienna, Lou, Tamryn, Shirley).

Sunday: Weybridge Ladies Regatta.

Our WmnsNov4x- started the day against Guildford RC. They might not have won, but it was an exciting first taste of racing for most of the crew. (Crew: Sarah, Anna, Michelle, Sue.) Tegwynne and Kathy followed in their Masters double. They had a convincing win over Marlow in the heat but eventually lost out to Mortlake in the final. (Crew: Kathy, Tegwynne.) Our last race of the day was the Masters coxed quad which won over a Walton crew by 4.5 lengths! A big well done to Maria, Debbie and Anji who have claimed double silver-ware this weekend. (Crew: Anji, Debbie, Maria, Jessica, Laura W)

Sports Yoga Trial

June 2016

We’re piloting “sport-specific yoga” over the next few

weeks at the club – it has proved to be very popular

and 16 people are going to experience at least 4

sessions with Emilie Garrod which is great.

Goodbye and thank you

Eve Gould

July 2016

Sadly our present Eve Gould has passed away. Eve was a true icon at Weybridge Ladies, who dedicated over 60 years of her life to our club. Still rowing at 87, always kind, cheerful and willing to help in any way - or row in any boat - she was a marvelous ambassador for women’s rowing. She will be sadly missed by us all, both past and present members. Our sympathies go to her sister Ellen.

WLARC is mentioned in British Rowing March / April 2016 magazine. In the article "LEADING THE WAY" celebrating International Women's Day on Tuesday 8 March, R&R's Zoe Gulen invited Dame Di Ellis to share her memories and milestones of Women's rowing.

We are pround to announce that WLARC founder Amy Gentry gets a special mentioning.

WLARC Welsh Indoor Rowing Champion

Keryn Jones

DECEMBER 2015

Keryn Jones did it again! She was knocking the socks off other national competitors at the Welsh Indoor Rowing Championships and came back with one gold and two silver medals!

Read more about her amazing achievement here:

"I agreed some time ago to take part in an Indoor

Rowing Relay World Record attempt which was taking

place on 19th December in Ireland. I was focusing

my training towards that.

As a result I decided a while ago that I was probably not in good enough shape to compete in the Welsh Indoor Champs as I was nowhere near the shape I was in for the English

Champs.

The weekend of the closing entry for the Welsh

Champs, I was doing a session at WLARC and I felt good.

I thought what the hell, I'll enter the 100m and 500m

as it's The Welsh Champs and I'm very passionate

about my Welsh roots. After the closing date, the

website stated how many entrants there were for each

event. In my category, there were only two people for

the 2k. I thought if I entered it late, I'd come away

with at least a bronze! So I entered.

The 2k was 1st and I was going to take it relatively

easy and treat it as a warm up for the later events. I came

out with the silver medal!

Next up was the 500m which is an event where I currently hold the English Gold Medal. I did the English one in 1.43.7 and

knew I was not in shape to do that. I decided to start

at 1.48 and then just see how I felt. Up to the 300m

point I was yoyo'ing between 3rd and 4th place. I felt

OK and the leader was 7m ahead. I decided to put my

foot down for the last 200m. I finished in 1.46 and 0.9

seconds ahead of 2nd place.

I'm now the Welsh and English 500m champion for my age

group.

Last up was the 100m. This was the only event I felt

comfortable about doing! It doesn't hurt, it's over

before you know it. The only difference with this

event was that it was an open competition which

means all age groups and weight categories. I came

2nd in this, 1st and 3rd on the podium were 'girls'

from Cardiff Uni Boat Team. Not bad considering I

could've been their mother!

A gold and 2 silvers made the drive worthwhile."

From everyone at WLARC a HUGE congratulations to Keryn! You rock girl!

WEHORR 2015

APRIL 2015

Women’s Eights Head of the River Race!

WEHORR is quite simply a marvellous race. 7

kilometres long, it is the University boat race – in the

other direction. More than 300 Women’s VIIIs on the

Thames, months of training all coming together in a

20 minute race, in a bizarre mix of pleasure and pain.

2015 WLARC Crew: Sarah W, Marion,

Gemma, Alex, Martina, Jenny, Lou & Shirley. Cox:

Lucia.

Crew and cox represented WLARC brilliantly at

WEHORR 2015 against a bitter east wind - fitness,

technique & determination all shone through.

They worked their socks off, firm pressure for 6.8km,

overtaking 3 crews & holding back a few others, that

were determined to try and pass.

The water time and winter training paid off; with the

aim of coming in the top 150, the result was

140 out of 300. In their category - IM3, they were 49th out of 124 boats, brilliant! Amongst others they beat the following clubs - Eton Excelsior, Molesey, Staines, Twickenham and

Walton!

It was a truly exciting race with fantastic support from our members on the banks to keep them going.

Big congratulations to all our other teams who entered

races during the Head season.

Spotlight on

WLARC Amy Gentry

MARCH 2016

On Tuesday 8th March WLARC members attended a talk on WLARC founder Amy Gentry, at the Henley River and Rowing museum, given by Eloise Chapman to celebrate International Women’s Day.

We were delighted to see several past members of the club there and they were thrilled to see our President, Eve. The talk was excellent, and further interest was provided by members of the audience who had many fond and amusing anecdotes to relate about Amy. She was such an inspiration to so many and as we all know, a true pioneer.

Transcript of the talk is available on the rowing history website, 'Hear The Boat Sing’.

BREAKING NEWS!

Keryn also holds two 500m gold medals making her the 2015 Welsh & English champion in her age group.

Powerboat

SEPTEMBER 2015

WLARC have raised the necessary funds to be able to purchase a powerboat and to have six coaches trained for a Level 2 Powerboat qualification. Congratulations to Mags, Sarah T, Shirley, Laurily, Lou and Lucia for qualifying.

As a result WLARC can now offer coaching not only from the bank, but also directly from the water. This provides a great opportunity to 1) improve communication between the coach and the crew and 2) enable our coaches to monitor our crews close up.

A great milestone and fabulous progress for Weybridge Ladies.

WLARC English Indoor Rowing Champion

Keryn Jones

MARCH 2015

Spotlight On…Keryn – English indoor rowing champion!

Congratulations to Keryn who completed her second Indoor Rowing Championships at the Manchester Velodrome on 29th March taking on the 2K, 500m and relay challenges.

As we expected, Keryn did brilliantly. She won GOLD in the 500m – fantastic effort and came 4th in her 2K category completing the distance in just 7:47 - that's an average split of 1:57!

Thanks Keryn.....erm, gives us something to aim for!
